St Joseph’s Home for Chronically Ill Children is a registered non-profit organization which has been a pioneer in the field of paediatric intermediate health care in South Africa. We provide free transitional care for chronically ill children from disadvantaged families, from hospital to home through a holistic health and wellness programme. Patients are referred from State Hospitals to continue with post-acute, restorative, palliative and rehabilitative care. It is imperative that children are not confined to a hospital environment longer than necessary.

Our patient-centred approach means that medically fragile childrens’ needs are at the core of our thinking and practice at St. Joseph’s. On average a patient spends 6 months receiving 24-hr nursing care, and rehabilitation therapy from a team of physio-, occupational and speech therapists. Although every effort is made to implement cost-saving measures, we are in need of funding to ensure our patients’ recovery process is secure and they reach their rehabilitation milestones. On average a child remains in our care for 6-months and we rely on donations to ensure their stay with us is as comfortable as possible.
